Book Review: The Fake Up by Justin Myers

Synopsis:

TWO EXES. ONE BIG SECRET. LET THE GAMES BEGIN…

Dylan and Flo are in love. The only trouble is, they broke up months ago and everyone was delighted for them.

At first, it’s exciting sneaking around, hiding from disapproving friends, climbing through bedroom windows to avoid family, and concocting hilarious disguises. It’s like Romeo and Juliet. With more sex and less poison.

But soon it becomes harder to separate truth from lies. Dylan and Flo are in way over their heads, and the games have only just begun . . .

Review:

Attracted by the cover and the synopsis I had such great expectations for this book Classed as a ‘romcom’ I’m really having a hard time categorising it as such, as it’s neither romantic or a comedy and in truth not at all what I had been expecting. It’s quite a laborious read, it felt lengthy when in fact it’s not. So much is packed into it and yet not a lot seemed to be happening and it lacked excitement and intrigue to keep me engaged in the plot. Dylan and Flo’s relationship lacked passion and they rarely showed their feelings and thought processes which would have added so much more depth to their relationship.

It would be unfair to concentrate too much on the negatives here, but suffice to say this book didn’t work for me as a romcom. I really did try to like it and stuck with it to the end hoping it would redeem itself, but even the ending left me feeling deflated instead of uplifted. I liked the concept, and the fake dating trope is a great idea. It had all the makings of a fabulous romance, the gorgeous cover and synopsis completely reeled me in. It just needed a little sprinkle of magic to liven up the story and characters. Although, this book wasn’t for me I’m always honest in my reviews and even though it didn’t captivate me there are other readers out there who will really enjoy it.
