ARC Review: One Night on the Island by Josie Silver

Synopsis:

Cleo writes about love stories every day. She just isn’t living one of her own.

When the editor of her dating column asks her to marry herself on a remote Irish island – a sensational piece to mark Cleo’s thirtieth birthday – Cleo agrees. She’s alone but not lonely, right? She can handle a solo adventure.

Cleo arrives at her luxury cabin to find a tall, dark, stubborn American who insists it’s actually his. Mack refuses to leave, and Cleo won’t budge either. With a storm fast approaching, they reluctantly hunker down together. It’s just one night, after all . . .

But what if one night on the island is just the beginning?

Review:

This book is a wonderful feel good romance and I was completely engrossed in it from the onset.  The remote setting is brilliant as are the wonderful characters on the island.  It’s warm, heartfelt and hopelessly romantic and it is as beautifully written as the author’s previous novel ‘One Day in December’.

Mack and Cleo are great together, I loved their connection and the slow burn build up of their relationship.  I was unsure how this long distance relationship would pan out, but the compromise at the end is the perfect solution.  These two are quite complex characters Mack is trying to pick up the pieces of a broken family life and the love for his sons is adorable.  I am unsure if I liked the ‘self-coupling’/marrying oneself concept, however it did suit Cleo’s personality on her journey of self discovery and her little wedding ceremony on the beach is quite moving.  The islanders are quirky and endearing, I loved the knit group at the community centre and the pub where everyone gathers for gossip and laughter.

The beautiful austere atmosphere and remote island setting clinched it for me.  I loved the cosy cabin vibes set against the wet, wild and windy coastline.  Dolphin and otter watching from the porch whilst drinking hot chocolate sounds just perfect.  Forced to share with a Hans Solo lookalike can’t be that bad either.  Perfectly executed and well written One Night on the Island is definitely a book romance fans need to add to their reading list.
