Book Review: Beach House Summer by Sarah Morgan

A marriage in the spotlight

Joanna Whitman’s high-profile marriage held more secrets than she cares to remember, so when her ex-husband dies, she doesn’t know what to feel. But when she discovers that he’s left behind a pregnant young woman, Joanna is forced to act. She knows exactly how brutal the spotlight on them both will be…unless she can find a way for them to disappear.

A beach house hideaway

Ashley Blake is amazed when Joanna suggests they lie low at her beach house in her sleepy Californian hometown. Joanna should be hating her, not helping her. But alone and pregnant, Ashley needs all the support she can find.

A summer of new beginnings

Joanna’s only goal for the summer is privacy. All Ashley wants is space to plan for her and her baby’s future. But when an old flame reappears, and secrets spill out under the hot summer sun, this unlikely friendship is put to the test…

Beach House Summer is a delightful summer read and the opening pages immediately draw the reader into the story. Beginning with some drama and intrigue surrounding Cliff and Ashley’s relationship and wonderful little plot twists and turns along the way, there is no doubt the author is a marvellous story teller. The setting is gorgeous, who wouldn’t want to spend time on the sleepy California coastline in an ultra modern beach house with floor to ceiling windows and amazing sea views. Hot summer sun and crystal clear sea on the doorstep and there is also a small book shop in the town, it sounds idyllic.

The characters are memorable and have depth and emotion. I liked the fact that the focus is on three strong women and the story is told from their points of view. There is a strong sense of community spirit and everyone is extremely supportive of one another. I enjoyed the second chance romance between Nate and Joanna, watching it unfold and the pair slowly getting to know each other again after twenty years apart. The unexpected and unlikely relationship Joanna and Ashley share is absolutely adorable, together with the strong and trusting bond forged as a result of the issues they are facing together.

True to it’s title this book is the perfect beach read. It’s not an overly complicated story but there is enough content to sink your teeth into. The perfect blend of drama, friendships and romance its ideal for all romance fans looking for summer escapism.
