Book Review: Something Wilder by Christina Lauren

Synopsis:

Lily has never forgotten the man that got away . . . but she certainly hasn’t forgiven him either!

As the daughter of a notorious treasure hunter, Lily makes ends meet using her father’s coveted hand-drawn maps, guiding tourists on fake treasure hunts through the canyons of Utah. When the man she once loved walks back into her life with a motley crew of friends, ready to hit the trails, Lily can’t believe her eyes. Frankly, she’d like to take him out into the wilderness – and leave him there.

Leo wants nothing more than to reconnect with his first and only love. Unfortunately, Lily is all business: it’s never going to happen. But when the trip goes horribly and hilariously wrong, the group wonders if maybe the legend of the hidden treasure wasn’t a gimmick after all. Alone under the stars in the isolated and dangerous mazes of the Canyonlands, Leo and Lily must decide whether they’ll risk their lives, and their hearts, on the adventure of a lifetime . . .

Review:

Something Wilder is a wonderful blend of romance alongside a wild and exciting adventure story. The story was not at all what I had been expecting, it’s unlike any other contemporary romance I have read before and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The romance is at the heart of the story, however in the alternative storyline there is heaps of action and adventure, plot twists and one or two jaw-dropping moments. It takes the reader on an exciting trip along the Outlaw Trail in Utah and touches upon some interesting history behind Butch Cassidy. The wild west setting is phenomenal and the author’s beautiful descriptions of the scenery conjures up vivid images of this amazing place. It hot, dry and desolate but at the same time absolutely stunning with the dramatic rock formations and remote canyons of the Maze.

The love story is beautiful as Lily and Leo reconnect after ten years apart. They are both adorable characters and share a great connection and bond despite their time apart. Lily is a tough cookie who also has a soft and vulnerable side and a great sense of humour. Leo is a quieter character but very loving and extremely clever and brilliant at solving mathematical codes and puzzles. The side characters play essential roles in the plot, some of whom are not particularly endearing but I adored Nic, Lily’s best friend.

This is a brilliantly crafted and fun book which I found both compelling and interesting. The second chance romance is really well done, as is the action packed side plot and its set against the most spectacular of settings.
