Today is my tour stop on the You and Me on Vacation Instagram Tour. As always I do a little blog post too. Thank you Georgia Taylor from Penguin Random House for inviting me on the tour.
Twelve summers ago: Poppy and Alex meet. They hate each other and are pretty confident they’ll never speak again.
Eleven summers ago: they’re forced to share a ride home from college, and by the end of it, a friendship is formed. And a pact: every year, one vacation together.
Ten summers ago: Alex discovers his fear of flying on the way to Vancouver. Poppy holds his hand the whole way.
Seven summers ago: they get far too drunk and narrowly avoid getting matching tattoos in New Orleans.
Two summers ago: it all goes wrong.
This summer: Poppy asks Alex to join her on one last trip. A trip that will determine the rest of their lives.
You and Me on Vacation is a wonderful heartwarming friends-to-lovers romance and I adored it from beginning to end. Poppy and Alex meet on their first day of university. They don’t hit it off immediately but after sharing a car ride Poppy draws out Alex’s fun and humorous side and they end up forming a special friendship. Complete opposites in personality and what they want from life made this relationship unique and interesting. I loved following them on their different holiday destinations and the fun and laughter they had, despite sometimes having very little money on a budget holiday. From the onset it is clear where it is headed, however it was still lovely to follow their journey getting there, the highs and lows of their friendship and then watching their feelings grow. I was rooting for both of them every step of the way.
The construction of the story is fabulous, there are two alternating timelines the past summers and the ‘This Summer’ narrative which then seamlessly coalesce towards the end. It’s really well written and the tender and gentle way in which some heavy topics are discussed brought a lump to my throat. A compelling read particularly with the lingering suspense of what happened between Alex and Poppy in Croatia, culminating in their two year silence.
There is excellent character development throughout and the perfect pacing and background history allows the reader time to get to know and love the characters. The chemistry between Poppy and Alex becomes intoxicating and I liked that the author beautifully describes their moments of passion and desire without the need to be smutty or explicit.
I enjoyed both of this author’s books immensely, but she certainly showcases her talent for romance writing in this one. I didn’t want it to end and I would quite happily read it all over again without hesitation. An uplifting and beautifully written summer read with warm and relatable characters. My favourite romance so far this year and I look forward to reading more of her books.
