When Addie La Rue makes a pact with the devil, she trades her soul for immortality. But there’s always a price – the devil takes away her place in the world, cursing her to be forgotten by everyone.
Addie flees her tiny home town in 18th-Century France, beginning a journey that takes her across the world, learning to live a life where no one remembers her and everything she owns is lost and broken. Existing only as a muse for artists throughout history, she learns to fall in love anew every single day.
Her only companion on this journey is her dark devil with hypnotic green eyes, who visits her each year on the anniversary of their deal. Alone in the world, Addie has no choice but to confront him, to understand him, maybe to beat him.
Until one day, in a second hand bookshop in Manhattan, Addie meets someone who remembers her. Suddenly thrust back into a real, normal life, Addie realises she can’t escape her fate forever.
This book is wonderful. I went into it with extremely high expectations based on all the rave reviews when the book first came out. As I often do with hyped books, I wait for the fuss to die down before forming my own opinions and this book book was worth the wait, it nailed it and completely exceeded my expectations. I adored every moment of this beautifully crafted book and despite it’s 560 pages I tore through it in a few days. Never knowing what is going to happen next, it’s such compelling reading. It’s beautiful and atmospheric and there is so much more depth to it than the usual fantasy romance. I enjoyed Addie’s relationship with Luc so much more than that of Henry. I loved the edginess of this relationship and all the way through felt, and hoped, Luc might come good in the end.
A very thought provoking and emotional book which everyone needs to read, Schwab never disappoints. A short and sweet review, but there’s only so much gushing about a book I can do!
