ARC Review: The Flip Side by James Bailey

One coin, one year and one new shot at love.

Josh thought he was doing everything right.

He found a girl. They adopted a rabbit. He finally found the perfect moment to propose.

She said no.

On the London Eye . . . On New Year’s Eve . . . Suspended 443ft in the air . . .

Now they’re awkwardly eating truffles and praying they’ll be back on the ground soon.

Realizing he can’t be trusted to make his own decisions, Josh decides to spend a year putting his faith in, well, fate.

From now on, every decision will be made by the flip of a coin. And maybe, just maybe, the coin will help him find the girl of his dreams.

After all, who says you can’t take a chance on love?

This was such an enjoyable book to read and it’s the perfect book to throw in your suitcase for a weekend away.  It’s warm and gentle, with an interesting premise and refreshingly it is from the male point of view.  It’s a quick and easy to read romcom with some lovely funny moments.

After a recent disastrous romantic failure and some bad decision making in his life, Josh decides to toss a coin for every decision he makes in his life for a whole year.  The story ultimately follows his meeting of ‘Sunflower Girl’ and his subsequent coin tossing journeys in trying to track her down. The descriptions of Paris and Amsterdam were wonderful and I could relate to the descriptions of the food, art galleries and the other places they visited, having been a visitor to some of these places myself.

I felt the book had a little bit of a slow start, however the pacing is generally good and the book held my interest throughout. The characters are wonderfully developed and very likeable.  I loved the delightful close friendship Josh, Jessie and Jake shared and I enjoyed reading about their antics and the wonderful supportive bond they had with each other.

This is a funny, warm and romantic comedy and the perfect summer or weekend read.  A great debut novel from this author.
